Author Emilia Hart brings us the gifts of magic and nature in her debut novel "Weyward". Grab a mug of tea and be transported to Crow's Beck, UK, where birds are messengers and insects carry secrets. Weyward Cottage is a ramshackle home that has been handed down from generation to generation. For Kate, the newest occupant, it is an opportunity to escape the abusive relationship she has been in. Now pregnant, she delves into the history of Weyward Cottage and finds our more about her family, and herself, than she ever bargained for.
"Weyward" is a beautiful novel that spans across hundreds of years. Altha is awaiting trial for witchcraft in 1619, accused of murdering her best friend's husband. Violet is coming of age in 1942 in post war Europe and is feverish with the desire to break out of the mold she has been in and become more than what is expected of her. Main character Kate flees her violent partner in 2019 and seeks refuge at Weyward cottage. Upon her arrival, she discovers that she is tethered to a long line of resilient, powerful women. She finds that nature can be the best healer of all, and there is untapped strength in the stories she is uncovering.
Hart outdoes herself in this first novel. Her prose paints a picture of a wild, untamed English countryside. Her characters are consistently oppressed by expectation and a patriarchy that demands submission. In the midst of their struggles their determination thrives. This novel shares a brilliant light on the history of feminine oppression while transporting the reader to a place of mystery and magic. Hart has set a new expectation for magical realism. Fans of Alice Hoffman, Jodi Picoult and Kristin Hannah will love this magnificent tale.
